George Churchward created the Small Prairie, or 45xx class, in 1906 for busy Great Western branch lines that required both freight and passenger services.

75 of these locomotives were built between 1906 and 1924, 20 were built at Wolverhampton and 55 were built at Swindon. 

The small prairies lasted into the early days of BR with the last ones being withdrawn from service in 1964. There are only a small handful of these locomotives left in preservation.

Lionheart has announced the production of the Great Western 45xx 2-6-2 prairie steam engine in die-cast metal for O Gauge.

We will only create models from the early 1930s to the mid-1960s since many changes occurred during their existence.

There will be 35 engines in all, and they will include the curved front valance from 4540 to 4554 (with the large bunker and packing piece to extend the frames) as well as 4555 to 4574 with full-length frames.

The majority of engines were classified 4MT and yellow routed, designed for branch line operation initially in the Western Counties but eventually becoming more common.

The Lionheart 45XX model is created using original blueprints.

These stunning replicas feature lots of internal and external details which make them a must have on any Great Western or BR model railway.
