Designed by GWR Dessigner Frederick Hawksworth and his team, the ’15XX’ featured a very short wheelbase for negotiating tight curves as well as outside cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear. It also shared the same design of boiler as the 94xx Pannier tank.

However, it was British Railways that eventually built 10 of the locomotives, that were primarily used in depots and empty stock movements due to the speed restriction imposed due to the short wheelbase.

1501 is currently preserved on the Severn Valley Railway where is powerful performance make it ideal for the preserved branch line and heavy trains.

Their working lives were cut short as the transfer to diesel power replaced steam locomotives across the network.
